What The Bleep Do We Know?

poster.jpgWhile What's Out Next is dedicated to Music, Technology and Buzz, form time to time we come across something different. Coming form an entertainment family and being in that business myself, I must admit that I have always believed that we create whatever reality that we want!

For those of you that don't believe me, simply go out and rent the movie "What The Bleep Do We Know?" Thanks to my son Michael I was able to see the film this morning and it had a profound and positive effect on me.

What's my take on it? I figured out why my sister-in-law has to take pharmaceutical drugs like ritilin and paxil. My Aunt Shirlee never emotionally recovered from her parents divorce. Why? It all has to do with how we see the world and how we think. As David Ickle likes to say "it is the silence between the thoughts." Why causes this grief? It has to do with people who do not live in the moment. People who are trapped by their own past or live in the past and can't get on with it. Make sense?

In the music business why is it that an artist like Sheryl Crow will produce album after album of hits while other artists like Duncan Sheik will only be a one hit wonder? It all has to do with how we view the world.

When you do your dream in the music business and you start out with an idea on a napkin most people will tell you....your nuts! Then if you stick with it all the things that you create start to take on a reality all of their own. Life is about living it as a fully integrated person.

Hey you must rent this movie! The change will do you good!

Just Give Me A Cheeseburger, Fries And A Shake!

burger_yes.jpgDid you know that every 24 hours over 600,000 new web sites are launched representing millions of words, thousands of graphics and huge amounts of media content.

We are all analog people in a digital world! Have you noticed the acceleration over everything? Art Bell of Coast-To-Coast calls it "The quickening!" At What's Out Next we call it progress.

Thank you everyone this week for all the wonderful emails about the show! Want to know a secret of why you love it? We actually produce it like a real radio show, not some guy (Sorry Adam Curry) who records a daily dose from the dashboard of his car or the bathroom at Carl's Jr.

We have so much to report in the upcoming days and weeks that we decided (just for a night) to stop the presses! Yes, I say yes and just go out for a Cheeseburger, Fries And A Shake! Let's just rock around the clock and party until the shakes come home!

I'll part tonight with a story about Marty's Music. This is the store my Dad opened with his Dad in 1956 in West Covina. The store was not even open yet with hundreds of boxes on the floor. A young couple excited that a new record store was opening knocked on the glass. My Dad opened the door and said with a big grin on his face "May I help you?" The young man asked for Rock Around The Clock. My Grandfather Martin Santell turned to the young couple and said "Thank you for asking but we are not open yet and we have no way of knowing what box your request is in." My Grandfather then picked a miscellaneous box and opened the top of it. Guess what record was right on top? You guessed it! Rock Around The Clock. My Dad and my Grandfather took that as a sign of success. It was for over 20 years.

From Beatles To Wings!

There is an emotional high (natural please) that comes from holding a Long Playing LP. Sitting in my garage is over 300 albums in mint condition from my Dad's day's in the music business. Do you remember the heart ache we all shared when the Beatles broke up? Man, it was like the Pope had just died and there was never going to be anyone to replace him.

We devote this post to one of my favorite "Beatles" Paul McCartney who happily transitioned from The Beatles to form a band with his wife Linda McCartney called Wings!

Paul's rise to stardom started very simply with his first single "Another Day." Paul's first "real" solo album was a true solo effort, since he plays all of the instruments. The album was recorded in Paul's basement in Scotland, which by this time had been converted into a studio (resembling Abbey Road's studio #2).

A fast succession of singles and albums followed with most critics and fans recognizing that Paul was back in full "Beatle form" with the 1973 release of Band on the Run.

Like you, I loved Band On The Run! The album that has the warmest memories for me was the 1975 Release of Venus and Mars! The track Rock Show (which launches with the Venus and Mars Intro) is pure Heaven! Just Listen What The Man Said!

Another interesting fact about Paul McCartney is that he actually had a syndicated radio show at one time but decided that the "music biz" was where it's at!
