artistShare Could Be The New Model!

Brian Camelio may be onto something big with his company aritstShare. Why? Because for the very first time in the history of the Grammies, an arist...her name is Maria Schneider, won a this world class award without ever pressing a CD. Think about it.....for me as a person who has been around this business since the age of six, this is a big thing!

Over the years the consumer has always "felt the music" upon the realease of a new album. In the case of Brian Camelio and his venture artistShare patrons participate in the "creation and creative process" of the product. It's a great idea.

Back in the days (circa 1996) when I was partnering with world class record producer Nik Venet, we always noticed that the people who invested in the music project were very fascinated by the process. When Nik started working with Linda Rondstadt in the early 1960's to produce Different Drum I am very positive that there was a real passion in developing Linda the same way that artistShare developed Maria Schneider. The difference is that the "audience" through financial contributions was able to participate in the creative. I am sure that Nik is smiling right now as the music industry is moving toward A Different Drum.

Independent Labeles, EMI and Wind Up!

newscom_logo.gifIn the music business, online or off, indie is often synonymous with cool. But cool doesn't always pay the bills.

Betting that collective action will help give them more market power, a group of 125 independent record labels initiated a new trade group Monday night aimed at giving them more parity with the four major music labels.

This disparity has come even as digital consumption patterns show the scales shifting toward consumption of independent music! More than 30 percent of Internet radio play is drawn from independent artists and labels, a sign that independents should have the same treatment as the majors.

Dubbed the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), the trade group's membership and specific goals remain somewhat diffuse. But leaders--including top executives at some of the biggest independents in the country--say they're hoping to help give indie businesses the power their collective market share deserves as the music business is transformed by digital technologies.

"Manufactured pop culture is disintegrating before your eyes as the Net takes hold, but some of these institutional biases hold on and continue into new media," Steve Gottlieb said. "Any arrangement that treats music differently by virtue of it being owned by multinationals is not a good strategy and is doomed to fail.

"If the marketplace understands better how important the independent community is, there will be greater opportunity," said Steve Gottlieb, chief executive officer of TVT Records and a member of the group's board of directors. The new trade group will be based in New York and plans to have a Washington, D.C., presence focused on legislation. Thank you John Borland of CNET news (one of my favorite web sites on the planet) for contributing to this report.

From our view it is very simple. Labels don't develop talent any more so it takes music people with vision to make things happen. It is interesting to note that EMI is planning on purchasing Wind Up Records. What do they do? You guessed it, develop talent!

What's our take at What's Out Next! These people are the starman!

Forget Me Not Panties!

forget_nav_logo.jpgAt What's Out Next we are 110% committed to Music, Technology and Buzz! Sometime we just can't believe our eyes when we see some of the stuff coming out. It is one thing to battle over copyright issues and debate the future of the music business.

Now this is a totally out of control situation and a product our team would never buy. Would you? Well, we have to protect our daughters and wives right? Well, we can maintain 100% control thanks to our friends at Panchira Corporation in Tokyo!

AAA_panties-1.jpgAccording to their web site, "These panties will monitor the location of your daughter, wife or girlfriend 24 hours a day, and can even monitor their heart rate and body temperature. Based on pioneering research developed by the U.S. military at DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), we have brought this revolutionary technology, previously only available to the military, to you!"

"These "panties" can trace the exact location of your woman and send the information, via satellite, to your cell phone, PDA, and PC simultaneously! Use our patented mapping system, pantyMap®, to find the exact location of your loved one 24 hours a day. The technology is embedded into a piece of fabric so seamlessly she will never know it's there!"

Hey man, if you have to buy your wife tracking panties, then I can guarantee you the relationship is over anyway. Now this is ridiculous! Okay, on second thought, maybe this woman is just a Hot Child In The City!

Then when I think about it, maybe these panties are named right, they are "Forget Me Notes!"
